Watch, read and play —
and pick up a language on the way

Fushi is a free, open-source immersion app for language learning: it turns anime, dramas, light novels, manga, audiobooks and visual novels into study material. Tap an unknown word to look it up; tap again to make an Anki card with the original sentence, a screenshot and the audio.

Learn Japanese with anime: click any word in the subtitles

Open local videos, a Jellyfin / Emby / Plex media server or an online video source in Fushi and click words right in the subtitles to see the dictionary entry, reading and pitch accent. External ASS, SRT and VTT subtitles and embedded tracks all work, with sentence-by-sentence navigation, replay of the current line and a subtitle list to look back through.

How to mine cards while watching anime

Dual subtitles to ease in — or generate subtitles yourself

Can't follow yet? Turn on a secondary subtitle so the Japanese line and a translation sit one above the other, and drop it once you're comfortable. Got a raw video with no subtitles? On-device speech transcription (ASR) generates subtitles straight from the audio track, and Blu-ray PGS image subtitles can be recognised into clickable text.

Using secondary (dual) subtitles

One-click Anki cards with sentence, screenshot and audio

Press the plus next to a definition and the card is done: word, definition, sentence, a video screenshot or GIF, sentence audio and word audio are filled in for you. On desktop cards go to Anki through AnkiConnect, on Android to AnkiDroid, on iPhone to AnkiMobile; the built-in Lapis note type sets up a deck in one tap, and cards made while Anki is closed wait in a pending queue instead of getting lost.

How to connect Anki

Read Japanese light novels and EPUBs, with audiobook sync

Import EPUB books with vertical text and furigana, and read them in paginated, scrolling or visual-novel mode — click any word in the text to look it up. Add an audiobook and its subtitles and the narration highlights sentence by sentence, so intensive listening, shadowing and mining all happen in one place.

How audiobooks work

Manga OCR: click the text in a speech bubble

Read local manga or online manga sources; built-in OCR recognises vertical and horizontal Japanese in the speech bubbles, so one click looks a word up and makes a card that carries a screenshot of that panel.

Live lookups in visual novels (Windows)

Hook visual novels into Fushi on Windows: the text hook captures the current line, and you click words in the line overlay to look them up and press the plus to make a card. With supported engines the character's voice line goes into the card too. Clicking text directly on the game screen is still experimental.

Yomitan and MDX dictionaries, with pitch accent and frequency

Import Yomitan (Yomichan) and MDX / MDD dictionaries directly. Lookups show definitions from several dictionaries at once together with Japanese pitch accent and word frequency, and you can keep clicking words inside the popup to look them up recursively. The onboarding wizard suggests a ready-to-use set of dictionaries and word audio.

Media servers, extension sources and BitTorrent

Connect Jellyfin, Emby or Plex to play the anime on your home NAS; install Mihon / Aniyomi extensions for online manga and video; the built-in BitTorrent client downloads whole seasons, follows subscriptions and files everything into your library. Per App Store rules the iOS version has no online sources or downloads.

Getting started

Immersion has exactly one requirement: a genuine interest in the content — anime, variety shows, films, novels, games, manga, anything you enjoy. No prior knowledge, no talent, not even “resolve” needed.

Pick content you love. Nothing matters more.

Listen to and read things made by native speakers for native speakers — not textbooks, not graded readers. Instead of “learn first, use later”, immersion lets you learn by using. Taking Japanese as the example, four steps:

Step 0: Set up FushiDownload Fushi and follow the onboarding: dictionaries, word-audio database, then install and connect Anki. From then on, one tap looks a word up while you watch or read, and another tap makes an Anki card with the sentence and audio.
Step 1: Learn the kanaUse kanabr or an Anki deck to get through hiragana. It doesn’t need to be solid — vocabulary study will reinforce it over and over.
Step 2: Core vocabulary and grammarKaishi 1.5k for vocabulary, and the Onigiri grammar guide (aiueo.cc) for grammar — up to N3/N4 is enough. 5–20 new cards a day is plenty; start the next step while you’re still studying vocabulary.
Step 3: Immerse, mining cards as you goWatch and read what you love, look up unknown words with a tap, and make cards when it feels worthwhile. You won’t understand everything — the more ambiguity you can tolerate, the faster your brain picks the language up.
